About our program

The PATHWAYS tutoring program is a non-profit, volunteer organization that operates out of Towson United Methodist Church (TUMC).

We provide free-of-charge educational support to individuals who have a desire and will to learn.

This program began in October of 2006 and offers tutoring for Baltimore City and County students at TUMC, where we provide a safe and secure learning environment.  We offer multiple tutoring sessions each Tuesday between 4:00 and 6:00 PM; sessions for different ages are available to individuals and to groups from local schools with whom we partner.

Please contact us if you have an interest in receiving our tutoring services or if you would like to be a tutor.  Contact Stephanie Kimmons at stephaniekimmons@comcast.net or 410-592-5442

Who we serve

We provide free of charge, educational support primarily to 3rd through 8th graders in Baltimore City and Baltimore County.  The individuals we tutor are dedicated and eager to learn, but may be in a situation or live in an area where affordable, specialized tutoring is not accessible.   We try to assist anyone who needs help; we have no restrictions based on age, race, religion, etc.  Though we have no rigid selection process for admissions, PATHWAYS focuses mainly on helping individuals with financial limitations

because these individuals would not otherwise be able to afford the high costs of tutoring.  Other youth or individuals in need of our services are also encouraged to contact us.

Our tutors

We have over 19 qualified volunteer tutors who have offered their services.  The tutors consist of a blend of certified teachers, experienced tutors, and capable college students.  Some of our teachers are experienced with at-risk youth and students with learning disabilities.  We offer tutoring from the elementary school level through middle school levels in subjects such as: algebra, trigonometry, English, reading, social studies, and standardized test preparation.  All tutors have all been approved by a screening process, either at the schools where they work or at TUMC through our "Safe Sanctuaries" program.

Announcements and Needs

PATHWAYS welcomes donations in the form of financial support and/or after-school snacks for students.  We are also in great need of chaperones to ride with the students on the bus.  Please contact us at the church, 410-823-6511, if you can help with any of these requests.  Thank you!

We are pleased to announce that for the academic year 2008-09, we are being supported through a grant from the Board of Child Care of The United Methodist Church Baltimore/Washington Conference.

October, 2008

Greetings from PATHWAYS, our church’s tutoring ministry,

The team at PATHWAYS would like to report some exciting news. Our summer has been full of planning for the upcoming academic year, and we are looking forward to the first day of tutoring, which will be Tuesday, October 7th at 4:00 pm. One week prior, on Tuesday, September 30th at 6:30 pm, there will be a tutor training session and a light dinner. If you are interested in tutoring with us on Tuesdays this year, please let us know and come on out for the training! We also need non-tutor helpers as well. To find out more about how you can help, please contact us.

This year, PATHWAYS has a goal of expanding the program into new schools, and we have been at work recruiting students from Halstead Academy (a school near our current partner, Pleasant Plains Elementary) and Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle (near our current partner, Barclay School).

We will also offer some new curriculum and enrichment activities to improve upon our tutoring sessions.

We are happy to report also that we have eliminated our budget deficit. We just learned that the United Methodist Board of Child Care has agreed to present us with a gift of $5,000. This, combined with proceeds from the Towson Rotary club, PATHWAYS Auction, TUMC Moment on Mission, and individual donations, has provided the program with funds sufficient to cover basic costs for this year. Since these are all one-time income sources, however, we still need support for next year. Please keep us in mind if you are considering a donation of any kind.

One of our biggest needs at this time is bus chaperones. If you would be willing to offer 2 hours of your time on one or more occasions to ride the bus, we would greatly appreciate it.

As always, we send our sincere thanks to the members and staff of TUMC for your generous support of this growing program.

To find out more about tutoring, being a helper, donating money or snacks, or being a bus chaperone, please contact Stephanie Kimmons at 410-978-5442 or stephaniekimmons@comcast.net.
