Lead Pastor

Rev. Rod Miller  grew up in the Philadelphia area, and was an exchange student to Australia in high school.  He received a B.A. in Religion in 1976 from Allegheny College where he served as an assistant to the chaplain, and went on to serve for two years as a US-2 – short term home missionary – in Camden, New Jersey (1976 – 1978) working to build community relations with children, youth, adults, and older adults.  While in Camden, the call to serve as a pastor became clear to him and he came to Washington, D.C. to attend Wesley Theological Seminary, graduating in 1982 with a Masters of Divinity degree.  During that time, he served as a student assistant at St. Thomas United Methodist Church in Manassas, Virginia (1979-1981) and also helped out at Eldbrooke United Methodist Church in Washington, DC (1981-1982).

Pastor Rod’s first full time appointment was to First United Methodist Church in Laurel, MD where he served as Associate Pastor.(1982-1984)   From there he went to Harford County and served Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Joppa Maryland (1984-1994).   While at Union Chapel, the church more than doubled in size.  In 1992, he received a Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.  The focus of his degree was Congregational Re-vitalization.  From 1994 – 2005 he served as senior pastor at Bethany United Methodist Church in Ellicott City, Md.  During this period the church more than doubled in size and added a 3.3 million dollar expansion of the sanctuary and educational facilities. From 2005 – 2011, he served on the staff of the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference as the Director of Connectional Ministries and as a Discipleship Guide, coaching pastors and congregations in the Baltimore area.  Pastor Rod also became a certified coach with the Coaches Training Institute.  In July, 2011 he began serving as Lead Pastor at Towson United Methodist Church in Towson, MD.

Margery is an ordained Deacon. What is a Deacon?  Deacons are “called, set apart, and ordained to a lifetime ministry of Word and service with a special commitment to service that connects the congregation with the needs in the world.  Deacons give leadership in the Church's life: in teaching and proclamation of the Word; in forming and nurturing disciples; in conducting marriages and burying the dead; in the congregation's mission to the world; and in leading the congregation in interpreting the needs, concerns, and hopes of the world.  In worship, a Deacon assists the Elders in the administration of the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper."
