The music ministry at Towson UMC is an active part of the worship, education, and service areas of the congregation. With 6 singing groups and 4 handbell choirs plus opportunities for various instrumentalists, there is something for just about anyone who wants to participate in the church through music.
Towson UMC has one five-octave and one three-octave set of handbells and a four-octave set of Choir Chimes which are played by adults, youth, and children in a variety of settings. Through membership in the American Guild of Handbell Ringers, we regularly attend workshops and festivals. The Sounding Brass is an adult group of ringers who are available during week-days to entertain at schools, nursing homes, etc. Our anthems often call for special instruments, and we regularly use the timpani and African drums that are at the church. We count on church members as well as guests to accompany anthems and hymns throughout the September - June choir season. We welcome new members any time throughout the year. PROGRAM YEAR SCHEDULE (September through early June) SINGING CHOIRS
CHANCEL CHOIR — Adult choir - Rehearse Wednesday nights 7:30-9:00. Primarily sing at the 11:00 Sunday morning service. Special concerts are held throughout the year.
JOYFUL NOISE — Rehearse at 8:00 AM and sing at the 8:30 service on the 1st & 3rd Sundays of the month. Come when you can. Rehearse a half-hour before the 8:30 Sunday morning service. All ages welcome!
ALLELUIA SINGERS (6 - 12 graders) — Rehearse Sunday evening 5:00-6:00. Sing at the 8:30 service the 2nd and 4th Sundays each month. Youth in this choir have the opportunity to sing on-the-road concerts and on a Summer Tour.
CAROL CHOIR (2nd-5th graders) — Rehearse on Tuesday evening 6:00-7:00. Sing during the 8:30 Sunday service usually the 2nd Sunday of the month. The Carol Choir members have an opportunity to be in the spring musical.
TREBLES (First graders) — Sing on Tuesday 6:00-6:30 PM. Beginning in January, they study the hymnal.
CHERUBS (4- and 5-year olds & Kindergartners) — Sing on Tuesday 6:00-6:30 PM. The Trebles and Cherubs sing at selected worship services. They have a joint concert the first Tuesday of May.
HANDBELL CHOIRS
GENESIS - for anyone who does not read music and has limited (to no) experience playing bells Rehearsals are Tuesdays, 7:00 - 7:45 PM, starts Sept. 14, 2010
FIRST TIME BELLS - for anyone who reads music but has never played bells Rehearsals are Tuesdays, 8:00-8:45 PM, starts Sept. 14, 2010
CELEBRATION RINGERS - for anyone who reads music and has some ringing experience Rehearsals are Sundays, 4:00 - 5:00 PM, starts Sept. 12, 2010
TOWER CHIMES - advanced ringers Rehearsals are Wednesdays, 6:00 - 7:30 PM (presently filled to capacity) |
All who enjoy singing are welcome to sing in a choir.
No audition is ever
necessary, nor do we have paid
soloists or section leaders. The adult singers and ringers number about 100 participants.
