 Keep in Mind

You are never too old to donate!  As long as you are 17 or older you are eligible to donate.

It doesn’t take long.  You should be through in under an hour!  ARC has improved the process and estimate you should be ready to leave in 45 minutes.

Activity afterwards is not limited.  You are requested to not lift anything heavy for 4 hours and to refrain from strenuous exercise for 12 hours.

It really doesn’t hurt.  Nearly everyone is a little nervous the first time they donate.  Most say they only feel a slight pinch when the needle is inserted.

Worried you may have a problem.  Seek out daily physical activity such as brisk walking.  Regular, steady activity encourages the marrow to produce more blood cells.  Improve iron absorption by consuming meat, fish, poultry and foods containing ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) at the same meal.  Search out and consume iron-rich foods like liver, beans, Turkey, Clams Spinach, Shrimp, Split Peas, Hamburger, Peas, Raisins, Chocolate, Tomato Juice, Shredded Wheat.  Drink lots of water!

Don’t assume you cannot donate.  Most people do not realize they really are eligible.  You can be on medicine or under a doctor’s care and still be eligible.  Many conditions (i.e. blood pressure, cancer, etc.), taking medications, or travel history does NOT automatically eliminate you from donating.  Many who have been told in the past they are not eligible to donate may now be eligible as wait times or guidelines have changed.
